The flag was designed by and is named after American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden. It was also used by the Continental Marines as an early motto flag. It was the first flag ever carried into battle by the United States Marine Corps, during the American Revolution.

The Gadsden Flag was created by Christopher Gadsden, a patriot, Congressman, Continental Army General, and Southerner who served on the Continental Congress' Marine Committee; he designed it for the Continental Navy's first Commander-in-Chief Esek Hopkins.
