Georgetown University was founded in 1789 as the first Roman Catholic college, and first of the Jesuit order, to be established in the United States. The town of Georgetown was then in Maryland, and pre-dated the establishment of the city of Washington. When the District of Columbia was created in 1791, it incorporated the town of Georgetown into its new boundaries. Georgetown is best known for its school of international relations, the School of Foreign Service.
