Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicting a Giardia lamblia protozoan undergoing binary fission, creating what appears to be a microscopic “heart.” This flagellated protozoan parasite inhabits and reproduces in the lumen of the small intestine and is responsible for the diarrheal infection giardiasis.

The life cycle of Giardia lamblia begins when humans ingest infective cysts via feces, fingers, food, fomites flies or infected water. The cyst then passes to the small intestine where excystation occurs and trophozites multiply asexually via binary fission. The diagnostic stage is marked by infective cysts passed in feces with trophozoites found in soft or fluid feces.
