It’s a girl! San Diego Zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby gorilla. The yet-to-be-named female baby gorilla, weighing around four pounds, was born to mother Kokomo and father Winston on Wednesday. Kokomo and the baby appear to be in good health.
Snowflake, the ONLY KNOWN albino gorilla. Lived at the Barcelona Zoo from 1967-2003. Captured from the wild by poachers in 1967, Snowflake lived out most of his life at the Barcelona zoo. He died at the ripe old age of 40 due to skin cancer, probably related to his albinism. He outlived all of his 22 children, none of whom were albino, but lived to see his many grandchildren - a rarity for gorillas.
Snowflake, the long-lived gorilla who died in 2003, was famous for being the only known albino gorilla. He became a wildly popular attraction at the Barcelona Zoo in Spain, where he lived almost his entire life, becoming almost a mascot for the city.
Here's Ozzie, or Ozoum. Living at ZooAtlanta, he's the oldest living male gorilla in the world. And he is great grandfather to Apollo of the North Carolina Zoo. Follow this board as we try to fill it up with pictures to illustrate Apollo's full family tree. Apollo, of the North Carolina Zoo, has just turned one year old as of August 31, 2013 and lives with his big brother Bomassa (also one year old).
