One of the rarest & most prized garnets in jewelry today is this brilliant green variety of grossular garnet called tsavorite. Tsavorite was first discovered in 1967 in northern Tanzania. Tiffany launched a marketing campaign in 1974 that brought recognition to the beautiful green gem. With the Tiffany & Co. Foundation Endowment, the Smithsonian was able to acquire this important 15.93-carat tsavorite garnet that exhibits the highly-prized vivid green color.
From a historical perspective, Demantoid is clearly the most important variety of the Andradite species. Demantoids from the Ural mountains of Russia were discovered in 1868. Possessing an unusual green color and a dispersion even greater than diamond, demantoid quickly became a treasured and expensive gemstone and was used by the famous Russian jeweler Faberge to create jewelry.
