Groundhog Family (Marmota monax) - photo by W. Perry Conway; Groundhogs are also called woodchucks. They are a type of rodent known as a marmot, and marmots are closely related to squirrels. They are found over all of North America. They are "true hibernators" – going into a dormant state where their body temperature and heart rate fall dramatically from late fall until late winter or early spring.
