Highland games are events held throughout the year in Scotland & other countries as a way of celebrating Scottish & Celtic culture & heritage, especially that of the Scottish Highlands. Certain aspects of the games are so well known as to have become emblematic of Scotland, such as the bagpipes, kilt, & the heavy events, especially the caber toss. The games also include entertainment & exhibits related to other aspects of Scottish & Gaelic culture.
Amanda Ford, a 33-year-old former Marine door gunner who served two combat missions overseas, took on her competition in Scottish athletic events Friday at the 61st Grandfather Mountain Highland Games like she was still on active duty. She placed first in six out of the seven heavy athletic events and was the only contestant to successfully turn the caber, an 18-foot, 110-pound telephone pole-like tree trunk.
