Hiroo Onoda holds up the samurai sword that he kept with him during his years in the jungles of the Phillippines. He was sent to the Philippines late in 1944 to lead guerrilla warfare tactics against the Allied forces. After the unit was defeated by the U.S. military, a number of Japanese soldiers fled to the mountains where they remained in hiding.
