"The Spirit of '76" was painted by Archibald Willard in 1876 for the centenial of the US. It was painted in Cleveland, OH as a joke but one of the subjects died during the painting and Willard decided to change it to a serious painting. It was an immediate masterpiece, embraced by the nation. It is very large, 8 x 10 feet in size. Willard painted 14 small copies, 3 of which still exist. The original is in Marblehead, MA, the birthplace of the US Navy.
