Nathaniel Hawthorne ~ July 4, 1804 - May 19, 1864 was an American novelist and short story writer. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His ancestor, John Hathorne, was the judge involved in the Salem Witch Trials.
Realgar is an arsenic poison, and a known carcinogen. The crystals are beautiful, but shortlived. On long exposure to light, realgar disintegrates into a reddish-yellow powder. (See picture in article.)
On Wikipedia, type in “Tree That Owns Itself”. ----This reminds me of a tree that we have in Baytown, Texas. It’s a big, beautiful tree right in the middle of the road. The pavement literally splits in half and cars have to drive around it. It’s so iconic and well-known in the area that it’s been the logo for the City of Baytown for as long as I can remember, probably since LONG before I was born.
