Arbenz tried to make his own New Deal just like FDR did and he opened the system to all political parties. The US saw this as an act of aggression. Once the US overthrew Arbenz it was noted that not a single part of Arbenz's government was Communist. This was a period of mass genocide and civil war. Between 1954-1996 200,000 people died, 83% being indigenous, and the US was involved in 93% of all deaths because of their backing of the government in Guatemala that they set up.
