Renowned British military surgeon James Barry was a pioneer in his field and enjoyed a celebrated and highly-accomplished career for over 50 years. After his death in 1865, it was discovered that he was actually a woman named Margaret Ann Bulkley. Source

In order to be a surgeon, Margaret Bulkley, (died 1865) had to pretend to be a man, Dr. James Barry. Commissioned as a Hospital Assistant with the British Army on July 6, 1813, she served her country for 50 years. Her true identity was discovered when preparing her body for burial.
