Today we pay tribute to the service and heroism of Lieutenant John F. Kennedy, a Navy PT Boat Commander during WWII. In August 1943, Kennedy and his crew had been running night missions near the islands of New Georgia when they happened upon a Japanese destroyer, Amagiri. The Amagiri unknowingly crashed into Kennedy's boat, splitting it in half. Two of Kennedy's crew were killed instantly, and five others clung to the boat's debris.
