On June 7, 1998 James Byrd, Jr. was murdered by three white men in Jasper, Texas.He was dragged behind a pickup truck and his body dumped in front of a local black cemetery. The crime led to passage of state and federal hate crimes laws. Lawrence Brewer was executed for the murder on September 21, 2011 and John King remains on death row while appeals are pending.
