John R. "Johnny" Cash (2/26/32-9/12/03) was born in Kingsland, Arkansas, the son of Ray Cash & Carrie Cloveree (née Rivers). In March 1935, when Cash was 3, the family settled in Dyess, AR. He started working in cotton fields at age 5. Cash began playing guitar & writing songs at the age of 12. Johnny Cash and his older brother, Jack, in 1936. Jack died at age 15 in a sawmill accident. Johnny Cash's name was plain J.R. until he enlisted in the air force. They didn't allow plain initials, so he chose the name John.
