April 12, 1955 ~ announcement of Dr. Jonas Salk's polio vaccine - I still remember Polio and not being able to go to the movies or be in crowds until this...all anti-vaccine folks should be made to read and see the history of just this one disease and its elimination!!!!!!!
On this day, March 26, 1953, Dr. Jonas Salk announced his polio vaccine. Two years later, the vaccine was released nationally in the US. Major funding for Salk's research came from the March of Dimes Foundation, which was set up by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. 58,000 cases of polio were reported in 1952; 3,145 people had died from it in that year.
Jonas Salk (1914-1995) became a hero overnight when it was announced that he had invented a vaccine for polio. Before Salk created the vaccine, polio was a devastating viral disease that had become epidemic. Each year, thousands of children and adults either died from the disease or were left paralyzed.
On April 12, 1955, Jonas Salk announced to the world that he’d created an injectable vaccine against polio. It would change the world. Today, only three countries in the world have polio: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. India was removed from the list in 2011.
