Around 63 A.D., Joseph of Arimathea is said to have returned to Glastonbury with 12 companions and found the hut on the spot where the abbey was eventually built. Joseph’s Common hawthorn tree (Crataegus monogyna var, biflora) was said to have survived until the English Civil War, but graftings have kept its stock in circulation.
