Mary Todd Lincoln met Abraham Lincoln while staying with her sister in Springfield, IL, but she came from a wealthy family in Kentucky. Her family was symbolic of the country as a whole. While her husband was President of the United States, Mary Lincoln's brother George and her half-brothers Alexander, David and Samuel all fought in the Confederate Army. Alexander was killed at Baton Rouge. Samuel was killed in the Battle of Shiloh. David was wounded at Vicksburg.
