A reoccuring motif in the novel is falling. Whether it be a fear of falling or actually falling. Both Angel and Meme fall for a great height, which greatly injures them. Marin is waiting for a falling star and Esperanza describes herself as floating with a red balloon tether. She hopes that she will float away and not fall like Angel and Meme.
