Nectaroscordum siculum - (Unwins Seeds) Allium siculum, also known as Sicilian honey lily, Sicilian honey garlic, or Mediterranean bells, is a perennial, ornamental, bulbous plant in the genus Allium used in gardening.
Fennel is crunchy and slightly sweet be sure to add this to your selection of fresh vegetables from the autumn through early spring when it is readily available and at its best. Fennel is composed of a white or pale green bulb from which closely superimposed stalks are arranged. The stalks are topped with feathery green leaves near which flowers grow and produce fennel seeds. The bulb, stalk, leaves and seeds are all edible. Fennel is closely related to parsley, carrots, dill and coriander.
Fennel Zefa Fiono- Origin Bred at the Swiss Federal Research Station- This variety has 3” bulb with edible blue-green stems and feathery green leaves. When compared with some of the traditional Italian varieties, it proved much more resilient under stress and much less likely to bolt. A spring planting will stand till late summer and cold hardy. Use the bulb, stalk, leaves, and seeds in Italian dishes and Mediterranean dishes. Great in a variety of stews, especially bouillabaisse.
Fennel features prominently in Mediterranean cuisine, where bulbs and fronds are used, both raw and cooked, in side dishes, salads, pastas, vegetable dishes and risottos. Fennel seed is a common ingredient in Italian sausages and meatballs and northern European rye breads.
