Miami university academic calendar

Section from the Miami University Handbook and Academic Calendar for the 1918-19 academic year. The note describes that Miami students are a member of the US Army while training in the SATC and still pursuing their education. In the handbook there is not much information on the project, but details were to be, “announced promptly after the opening of college”. Freshman men came to Miami, and were immediately placed in a SATC company based on their abilities. #MUArchives , MU Handbook 1918-19

Miami's commitment to teaching tops in U. News rankings! Miami's overall ranking jumps to among national public universities and earns place behind Dartmouth and Princeton for "unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching".

Male students in the SATC were to be awake by 5:45 every morning except Sunday, and a loud military style wake up, a reveille, occurred at 6:00. Four hours of military and athletic activities daily, and eight hours of class, study, or lab. Doors were taped shut at 9:45 p.m. The students lives were intensely controlled and these young men accepted these military restrictions as their patriotic duty while also pursuing their education. #MUArchives , WWI Files box

In the brochure requesting $200,000 from the Hamilton District there was racist and derogatory language toward Germans. It is interesting that they would be this openly racist to Germans given the large population of German-Americans in southwestern Ohio. It states above this racist message that donations already made for the war effort are basically irrelevant. #MUArchives , WWI Files box

Induction of 450 Miami students into the military service of the US Army. Article in the Miami Student called it, “the most impressive and significant ceremony in the history of Miami”. Late in the war, 150,000 American college students were inducted into the Army on the same day. Speaks to the level of commitment to the war effort of American universities in general, and Miami specifically. #MUArchives , Box: WWI Files

A memo to SATC students from Commanding Officer John Shenkel. Shenkel states that in order to be considered for officer training must “stand well in his academic work”. A grading scale would be used to determine candidates for Officer Training camp and academic record had the largest impact. This shows that in order to assume a leadership role militarily, the SATC students training for the US Army must also excel academically. #MUArchives , WWI Files box, SATC folder
