Train Your Brain Using the Navy SEAL Mental Toughness Program
A strong mind is our biggest asset. It's encouraging to see validation concerning the effectiveness of positive self-talk, visualization, and slow breathing from neuroscientists when training Navy SEALS. We can follow the same "Mental Toughness Program" to strengthen the mind.
Lt. Michael Murphy was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2005 after leading a four-man SEAL team on a reconnaissance mission, according to a Navy report. After coming under fire from approximately 50 insurgents, Murphy knowingly exposed himself to enemy fire so he could transmit a signal requesting immediate assistance for his team. Murphy and two of the other SEALs died in the firefight, though the fourth member, Marcus Luttrell, survived.
Navy SEAL Adam Brown was killed in action in Komar Province, Afghanistan on March 16, 2010. Adam Brown's story is one of redemption, strength, determination and especially faith. He overcame many extreme hurdles by the grace of God and rose all the way to SEAL Team 6. Eric Blehm wrote a book on Brown called "Fearless." It is worth reading.
