Opal Pool—Willamette National Forest, Oregon: A leap into the refreshingly brisk waters of Opal Pool should come with an automatic membership into the Polar Bear Club -- even during the dog days of summer, the waters hover near a bracing 42 degrees. Luckily, you will have worked up quite a sweat by the time you reach the pool, after a 3.5-mile hike through the old-growth Douglas firs of the Willamette National Forest’s Opal Creek Wilderness Area.

Last weekend, my family and I had the opportunity to hike in the Opal Creek Scenic Area and Wilderness. It is located east of Salem, in the Willamette National Forest. Opal Creek runs through thousands of acres of protected old growth forest, crisscrossed with over 30 miles of hiking trails.

Opal Creek - Salem, OR area. An easy 4-mile hike traverses the old-growth forest to 30-foot Sawmill Falls. A longer, 7.1-mile loop extends upriver to Opal Pool and Jawbone Flats, a Depression-era mining camp.
