The original Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the baptist minister Francis Bellamy. Bellamy had hoped the pledge would be used by citizens in any country. It originally contained the phrase "my flag." This caused concern that some would pledge to the flag of their native countries, so in 1923 the words "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. In 1954, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the pledge we say today.

A short history of the Pledge of Allegiance. Good, except they credit Eisenhower for adding "under God" to the Pledge. The Knights of Columbus lobbied for this addition.

The idea that God is an intrinsic and necessary part of the Pledge is silly. The original Pledge of Allegiance didn’t even include the phrase “under God.” It was added in the 1950s. But why is the Pledge itself still mandatory in so many places?

Facts about the Constitution: ❶Originally it had only 1 reference to religion: "No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification..." ❷Original national motto was "Out of Many, One," but in 1956 it was changed to "In God We Trust" ❸The original Pledge of Allegiance didn't include "Under God." That was added in 1954. The changes were made b/c of the fear of communism after the Red Scare in 1950's. •••Let's not let fear change our nation's great traditions & directions again.
