The original Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the baptist minister Francis Bellamy. Bellamy had hoped the pledge would be used by citizens in any country. It originally contained the phrase "my flag." This caused concern that some would pledge to the flag of their native countries, so in 1923 the words "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. In 1954, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the pledge we say today.
The original pledge of Allegiance.....Did you know the present version to this was written in 1956? It was in the era of Sen. Joe McCarthy and his "witch hunts". Learn about this moment in our history. We can learn from it.
