The Cathay Hotel (currently The Fairmont Peace Hotel) opened in 1929, was the most opulent & modern hotel in Shanghai in the pre-1949 years, featuring then luxurious amenities like air-conditioning & an electric elevator. It was the hotel of choice for visiting dignitaries & celebrities such as George C. Marshall, Charlie Chaplin, George Bernard Shaw, & Noel Coward, who actually wrote "Private Lives" while staying there.
