In 1879 Wyatt Earp, who had built a reputation as a gunfighter in Dodge City, Kansas, settled in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. Earp tried to create some semblance of order in Arizona, working first as the deputy sheriff of Pima County and later as deputy U.S. marshal for the entire Arizona Territory. In Tombstone, Wyatt got into a feud with a local rancher that resulted in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, perhaps the most famous gunfight in American history.
