Designed to shade the wearer's head and face from the sun, pith helmets were often worn by people of European origin in the tropics, but have also been used in other contexts.

Gen (later field marshal) Erwin Rommel wearing pith helmet and tropical uniform shortly after he arrived in Africa. The medal hanging from the neck is the Military Order of Savoy, an Italian medal. The pith helmet was original issue for the Africa Corps but was eventually replaced by a regular cloth cap. Rommel himself wore his regular Wehrmacht cap throughout his deployment in the desert.
