Carlos Mendieta leader of Cuba was installed as President after a coup lead by Fulgencio Batista. He was unable to establish political stability but during his time he retracted the Platt Amendment. Cuba received a favorable tariff preference as a result of the Platt Amendment and that ended in 1934. However, the long term lease of Guantanamo Bay continues.

Cordell supported Roosevelt's policy saying,  "No country has the right to intervene in the internal or external affairs of another" and served as a dignitary to many Latin American Countries. The Good Neighbor Policy saw the removal of United States Marines from Haiti and Nicaragua, and caused the annulment of the Platt Amendment.
