Pope Sixtus IV, born Francesco della Rovere , 1414-1484 Posthumus portrait by Titian. Sixtus IV sponsored the building of the Sistine Chapel (It takes its name from him- Sisto in Italian), and re-founded, enriched and enlarged the Vatican Library, one of the oldest in the world.

The Character: Pope Sixtus is brilliant, nepotistic and homosexual. He loves art and learning, and rebuilds the Vatican library. He aims to shore up the Church’s spiritual authority and increase its wealth. He doesn’t feel threatened by da Vinci, but he does want to use and control his genius for his own ends.
