Shingles and Postherpetic Neuralgia. Herpes zoster, otherwise known as shingles, is the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus. Once reactivated, the virus spreads along the dermatome of the sensory dorsal root or cranial nerve ganglion.  Because the virus is confined to spreading within a specific nerve, the rash will have a pattern or strip-like appearance.
