July 20,  1948: SYNGMAN RHEE BECOMES THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF SOUTH KOREA  -   Syngman Rhee, the leader of Korean independence movement becomes the first president of the Republic of Korea. He assumed office 4 days later. He ruled South Korea during the Korean War. Koreans grew increasingly dissatisfied with his dictatorial leadership and in 1960 Rhee resigned amid student demonstrations and government votes against him.
