TORTOISESHELL book from Amsterdam: copy of Psalmen Davids (The Psalms of David) published in 1688 by Johannes Schot, Abraham Vander Putte and Jacob Looman. From the Charlotte Smith Miniature Collection, uncatalogued. (Special Collections and Archives, University of Iowa)
Psalm 51 is a Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9) David has realized that what the prophet Jeremiah said and fell on his face before God. Isn't it a beautiful thing when Scripture confirms Scripture? Everyone can (and should) do this when they realize their brokenness and desperate need for a Savior.
