Carthaginian officers during the Punic Wars. The officer class was comprised of aristocratic men from the noble strata of society. It was only during the conclusion of the first Punic War that men of more humble origins came to the fore. Unfortunately it was too late and Carthage was defeated.

The Romans were the first major proponents of chain mail and during the First Punic War the Carthaginians were treated to a front row demonstration of its protective abilities. They were notably impressed and Hannibal’s African troops often stripped dead Romans for their elaborate hauberks.
Hannibal Barca -Hannibal, son of Hamilcar Barca(247 – 183/182 BC)[was a Punic Carthaginian military commander, generally considered one of the greatest military commanders in history. His father, Hamilcar Barca, was the leading Carthaginian commander during the First Punic War, his younger brothers were Mago and Hasdrubal, and he was brother-in-law to Hasdrubal the Fair.
