The valley was submerged when the Xin'an River hydroelectric dam was constructed in 1959, forming Thousand Island Lake (Qiandao Lake). 290,000 residents of Shi Cheng had to be relocated, the Lion City is now about 85 – 131 feet beneath the surface. #heritage #culture
