The match between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was probably the most famous royal pairing in the recent history. The marriage resulted in nine children, forty-two grandchildren, and eighty-eight great-grandchildren. Many of the Royal Houses bore their descendants, making Victoria the “grandmother of Europe.”
Victoria Sponge Cake This delicious layer cake, popular at afternoon teas in England, was named in honor of Queen Victoria. It eschews cloying frosting for a shower of confectioners' sugar and a filling of whipped double Devon cream with strawberry jam.
