The tragedy of the Viet Nam war is graphically illustrated in this picture of a Vietnamese woman and her children wading across a river to escape bombs raining from U.S. planes during an air strike on their village near Qui Nhon. Planes were called in to knock out Viet Cong snipers who were firing on U.S. Marines from the village. This picture was selected by United Press International as one of the best of the year. - UPI PHOTO BY STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER KYOICHI SAWADA 12-9-65
