I had never heard of the term Rainbow Baby until talking with a client and friend, who I met shortly after our loss, at the time of their loss. She now has twins that are a year old, and my rainbow baby is almost six months old. We went to hell and back to have her, and it really is very fitting. She brings joy and color to my life that I didn't know was missing!
A rainbow baby is a baby conceived after miscarriage or stillbirth. "Rainbow Babies" are the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravages of the storm. When a rainbow appears, it does not mean that the storm never happened or that the family is not still dealing with its aftermath. What it means is that something beautiful and full of light has appeared in the midst of the darkness and the clouds.
A "Rainbow Baby" is a term used to describe a child born after one or many losses due to stillbirth, miscarriage, or death in early infancy. We lost our daughter Mercy last year around this time. Evie is our little rainbow baby.
