Rear-Admiral Doorman made contact with the enemy surface vessels at about 4.12pm that afternoon, 50 miles north of Surabaya, sighting a Japanese squadron consisting of at least two heavy cruisers of the Nati class, plus a number of other enemy cruisers and thirteen destroyers organised in two flotillas.
"Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, USNR (1906-1992). Hopper earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics when it was rare for women to college. She joined the WAVES in WWII and retired in 1986 at the age of 80 with the rank of Rear Admiral, being the oldest member of the Navy on active duty. Grace Hopper was also one of the foremost pioneers in the field of computing - she was a programmer on the Mark I at Harvard Labs during WWII.
