My personal Hero: Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, USNR (1906-1992). Hopper earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics when it was rare for women to even go to college. She joined the WAVES in WWII and retired in 1986 at the age of 80 with the rank of Rear Admiral, being the oldest member of the Navy on active duty. Grace Hopper was also one of the foremost pioneers in the field of computing - she was a programmer on the Mark I at Harvard Labs during WWII.
