This photo of Rosalia Lombardo was taken in 1984. Why is that interesting? She was the last person buried in the catacombs of the Capuchin Monastery 64 years before this photo was taken, in 1920.

Rosalia Lombardo was born in 1918 in Palermo, Sicily and died on December 6 1920. Rosalia's father approached Dr. Alfredo Salafia, a noted embalmer, to preserve her. She was one of the last to be admitted to the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo in Sicily. She appears as if she were only sleeping, hence receiving the name "Sleeping Beauty" . She is kept in a small chapel at the end of the catacomb's tour and is encased in a glass covered coffin, placed on a marble pedestal.

Why Does This Mummy Appear To Open And Close Her Eyes?

One of the world's best preserved mummies, Rosalia is the most famous among some 8,000 mummies lining the catacombs beneath the Capuchin convent in Palermo, Sicily. Nicknamed "sleeping beauty," she looks like a 2-year-old baby taking a nap. Poking above a blanket, her peaceful face is framed by curly blond hair, while a ribbon is still tied around her head.
