Candy Cigarette by Sally Mann (1989). Candy Cigarette, from her honest and controversial series Immediate Family, captures one of her three children, Jessie (now a model and artist), in a defiant and self-aware pose, staring down the lens at her mother, holding bubblegum cigarette.
Sally Mann is my favorite photographer because of this photo. It reminds me of my childhood, and I die every time I see it. Someday, I hope I can photograph my children as openly and honestly as she did. Such a talented woman.
Sally Mann I repinned this beacaue it was also made by one of my favorite photographers, Sally Mann. This is from the immediate family series and really shows how she tried to capture her children's personalities while reflecting real life situations.
Sally Mann - Immediate Family, 1992 Artist’s statement: “These are photographs of my children … many of these pictures are intimate, some are fictions and some are fantastic, but most are of ordinary things every mother has seen. I take pictures when they are bloodied or sick or naked or angry. They dress up, they pout and posture, they paint their bodies, they dive like otters in the dark river.” Read more about Sally Mann at Gagosian Gallery.
