M. pneumoniae infection has been associated with bullous myringitis in the setting of pneumonia. M. pneumoniae is a common cause of community acquired pneumonia in healthy patients under the age of 40. Bullous myringitis is an inflammation of the eardrum in which painful, fluid filled vesicles form. Patients with M. pneumoniae will present with typical signs of pneumonia. The presence of otalgia should prompt evaluation for bullous myringitis.
