Irving Penn- I feel that this image can be seen as both female and male; male as it has many male related items such as cards which can be further related to gambling. But, on the other hand the delicate handle of the tea cup.

The first known Spanish painter of still life was Blas de Prado, however none of his work survives. It is believed he instructed Juan Sanchez Cotan (1560-1627). The earliest of these Cotan paintings and likely the earliest known Spanish still life, or bodegon is 'Still Life with Game, Vegetables and Fruit' (1602). It exemplifies the mastery he brought to the genre: everyday objects instilled with a dignity that monumentalises them.
