Phospholipids Phospholipids are lipids that contain a phosphate group. Phospholipids are amphipathic because two fatty acids (tail) are nonpolar while the phosphate group that is invariably attached to another chemical group is polar (head) . Phospholipids give rise to two structures when placed in water: Phospholipid bilayer - forms the basic structure of cell membranes.
