5 Hands-on Strategies to Teach Reading Comprehension for ESL Students

Reading comprehension for ESL students is critically important due to the language barriers these students have. This post outlines five hands-on reading comprehension strategies that will help your students grow their reading comprehension skills.

Tabletop Twitter: The teacher chooses a passage from a book for students to respond to. Student write their own response and then move around to respond to what another student said. Since this is a Twitter-inspired activity there is no talking and short responses.

Fun & easy way for students/parents/teachers to respond/comment @ Writing Celelbration

This is an engaging summarizing activity where your students read an original short story. After they have finished reading, students identify the characters, setting, beginning/problem, middle/events, end/resolution, and theme on the individual pieces of the sundae. Finally, students use their pieces to write a complete summary!
