Hiroo Onodo died Jan 17, 2014.  He was the last Japanese soldier to surrender after World War II.  He surrendered on Lubang Island in the Philippines in March 1974 after living alone in the jungle for 29 years.  He later became a rancher in Brazil and a teacher in Japan.
