This read brought me back to my semester abroad, which began in January 2015 in Paris with a seminar on European identity. In studying French identity, we visited the Panthéon, Mémorial de la Shoah and The Grand Mosque of Paris discussing immigration and assimilation tensions. We left the city the day before the Charlie Hebdo attacks. The attacks and their repercussions brought our studies into sharp focus, exposing the depth of a problem we had been thinking of as largely academic.
