The Man Who Laughs was a 1928 silent film based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo.  Conrad Veidt starred as the main character with Mary Philbin as his childhood friend Dea. Among other things, Veidt's character Gwynplaine served as the inspiration for the Joker in Batman comics.
