Sir John Everett Millais, 'Mariana,' 1851, oil paint on mahogany, on loan to the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. from the Tate in London. When it was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1851 this picture was accompanied by the following lines from Tennyson's 'Mariana' (1830): "She only said, 'My life is dreary,/He cometh not,' she said;/She said, 'I am aweary, aweary,/I would that I were dead!'"
A modern take on the moat: entryway over water. Mixed wood panels against a crisp white entrance and dark planters. Orange Street Studio, Skytop project in Encino, California. We love their modern aesthetic.
