The Sting received rave reviews and was a box office smash in 1973–74, taking in more than $160 million. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The film won seven Academy Awards and received three other nominations and is noted for its use of ragtime music, particularly the melody "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin.

He is best known as the principal songwriter, lead singer, and bassist for the influential new wave rock band The Police and for his subsequent solo career.
