The Internet of Things includes everything from smartphone apps that control your homes lights and temperature from afar to real-time analytics that help ease traffic congestion and city parking woes, according to SAP.
In London in the 1630s the clogging of narrow streets by the increasing number of horse-drawn vehicles was a problem. A solution was found in the sedan chair, introduced, probably from France, by Sir Sanders Duncombe. He was given a patent for the exclusive right to hire sedan chairs in England for 14 years from 1634. Sir Sanders argued that “the lives and limbs of his majesty’s subjects were greatly endangered by the multitude of coaches in London and Westminster”.
